Commencement Checklist for Advanced Degree Candidates

Step 1: Apply to Graduate

To participate at Commencement, you need to have completed the appropriate paperwork on time, and received approval from the Graduate Division. For specific eligibility information and application deadlines, visit the Graduate Division website or contact Trina Elerts in the Graduate Division Student Affairs Office.

Step 2: Review and Update your Information in R'Web

Review your contact information and how your full name and degree information are recorded in R'Web as soon as possible to ensure that they are correct.

If you need to have your name corrected, information regarding requesting a change or correction of name is available on the Registrar's website.  Any changes or corrections to your name need to be updated to your record by May 8 to be included in the Commencement Program book, so please allow the Registrar’s Office sufficient time to process your request.

If you need to have your degree information updated or your dissertation or thesis title corrected, please contact Trina Elerts in the Graduate Division Student Affairs Office.  Any changes or corrections to your degree information need to be updated to your record by May 8 to be included in the Commencement Program book, so please allow sufficient time to process your request.

Step 3 (for Ph.D. and M.F.A. candidates): Confirm your Research Adviser's Attendance

Ph.D. and M.F.A. candidates: You will be hooded on stage by your research adviser, so please contact them and confirm they can attend. If your adviser cannot attend, you may ask another member of your dissertation committee to hood you.

Step 4: Order Guest Tickets

Not everyone who graduates chooses to participate at Commencement. If you are planning to attend, you must register and order guest tickets between Thursday, April 20, 2017 and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017. Please see your ceremony page for more information regarding tickets.

Step 5: Purchase or Rent your Cap and Gown

Ph.D. candidates: If you wish to purchase a custom blue UC doctoral gown, tam and hood you may do so online here. Deadline to purchase a custom doctoral gown is  Friday, April 28, 2017.  Purchase prices are as follows:  blue UC Ph.D. Gown - $759.00; UC Ph.D. Hood - $165.00; Blue Velvet Tam - $133.00; UCR Tartan Tam - $150.00; Class of 2017 Tassel: $7.98.   

If you prefer to rent a traditional black doctoral gown, hood, mortarboard and tassel, you may rent at Grad Fair, April 25 - 27. Following Grad Fair, Ph.D. regalia may be rented at the UCR Campus Store until June 1, 2017. The rental price for Ph.D. regalia is as follows: black Ph.D. gown - $42.98; Ph.D. hood - $38.98; mortarboard  - $4.98.  

Master's candidates: Master's regalia may be purchased at Grad Fair, April 25 - 27. Following Grad Fair, master’s caps, gowns and hoods may be purchased at the UCR Campus Store.  Prices are as follows:  Master’s gown, cap and tassel package - $58.98; Master’s hood - $36.98

Step 6: Attend Grad Fair and Pick up your Tickets

Grad Fair will be held Tuesday, April 25 through Thursday, April 27 in HUB 302.

Commencement tickets ordered online between April 20 and April 27, 2017 will be available for pick up in HUB 355. 

Grad Fair and Ticket Distribution hours:

  • Tuesday, April 25, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 26, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 27, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

You must come in person, with your student ID, in order to receive your tickets, or if you designated a courier when you submitted your ticket order, they may pick your tickets up for you with a valid ID.

If you are not able to pick your tickets up during Grad Fair, additional dates and times for ticket distribution will be posted on the Tickets page. 

Step 7: Attend the Graduate Division Commencement Ceremony on June 17, 2017

All Doctoral and Master’s degree candidates will participate in the Graduate Division ceremony on Saturday, June 17, at 6:00 p.m. on the Pierce Lawn.  Please arrive on campus no later than 5:00 p.m. and check-in outside of the Student Services building.  Refer to the Graduate Division ceremony webpage for additional details.

Ph.D. and M.F.A. candidates will be hooded on stage during the ceremony. Please bring your hood with you, but do not wear it.

Master's candidates: Please wear your hood to the ceremony with your cap and gown.

Step 8: Join the UCR Alumni Association

Stay Connected! We take great pride in our graduates and want to ensure your further success. Join the UCR Alumni Association to stay connected, meet fellow alumni and build a beneficial network.

Step 9: Diplomas

Diplomas are not distributed at Commencement. For information regarding the distribution of diplomas, please visit Registrar's website.
