Commencement / Hippocratic Oath Ceremony Checklist

(M.D. Candidates in the School of Medicine)

Step 1: Apply to Graduate

To participate at Commencement, you need to have filed your graduation application on time, and received approval from the School of Medicine. The deadline to file your graduation application will be announced during Winter Quarter.

Step 2: Review and Update your Personal Information in R'Web

Review your contact information and how your full name and degree information are recorded in R'Web as soon as possible to ensure that they are correct. If you need to have your name corrected, information regarding requesting a change or correction of name is available on the Registrar's website. If you need to have your degree information updated please contact Cheri Black, SOM Registrar as soon as possible.

Step 3: Submit your Intent to Participate Form when the link is e-mailed to eligible students starting April 16, 2020

Not everyone who graduates chooses to participate at Commencement. If you are planning to attend, you must register to walk in Commencement through the Intent to Participate form beginning April 16, 2020. 

The Intent to Participate form will be e-mailed to eligible students. You must submit your Intent to Participate form by May 4, 2020 to ensure that you are printed in the commemorative Commencement book.

Step 4: Purchase your Cap and Gown

M.D. candidates: UC Riverside is happy to provide complimentary UCR Tartan tams for all M.D. graduates. Information regarding the distribution of the complimentary tams will be sent via e-mail from commence@ucr.edu by April 1, 2020.

The School of Medicine will be providing complimentary M.D. regalia packages (gown, hood, and complimentary UCR Tartan tam). Please order your complimentary regalia packages online here. School of Medicine ceremony organizers will pick your regalia and complimentary Tartan tam up for you and will have it ready for pick up before your ceremony.

Following the ceremony, you may keep complimentary Tartan tam, but hoods and gowns must be returned. You may return your regalia anytime during the post-ceremony reception at the regalia return table located in the SRC South MAC gym, or you may return it to the UCR Campus Store during their regular business hours.

If you wish to purchase an M.D. hood, gown, and cap, you may purchase it through the UCR Bookstore. The cost for the hood is $122.00, gown - $205.00, cap - $39.00 and tassel - $7.98.

Step 5: Attend Grad Fair

Grad Fair will be held Tuesday, April 21 through Thursday, April 23 in HUB 302. At Grad Fair, M.D. candidates may choose class rings, graduation announcements and diploma frames. Please note that M.D. regalia will not be available for rental at Grad Fair. 

Grad Fair hours:

  • Tuesday, April 21, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 22, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 23, 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Step 6: Order your Guest Tickets starting May 13, 2020

Ticket ordering will open starting May 13, 2020. Information regarding how and when to order your guest tickets will be sent via e-mail to registered students the week of May 4.

Once you submit your ticket order, you will be given the option to either print or electronically distribute your tickets via email. Each ticket will have a unique barcode and may only be scanned once for admittance. Duplicate tickets will be denied entrance.

Step 7: Tell Us your Plans After Graduation

You've made it to graduation, but what's your next destination? Tell us your next step now!

Step 8: Attend the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

M.D. degree candidates will participate in the School of Medicine ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center North’s main gymnasium. Please arrive on campus no later than 3:00 p.m., and check-in at the Student Recreation Center MPR-C, 1st level, SRC North. School of Medicine ceremony organizers will have your regalia for you when you check-in. Refer to the School of Medicine ceremony page for additional details.

Step 9: Leave Your Legacy

Leave your mark at UCR by making a contribution to the 2020 Senior Class Gift Campaign. Generations of Highlanders before you helped pave the way for the class of 2020 by giving back to UCR through philanthropy and service.

Step 10: Join the UCR Alumni Association

Stay Connected! We take great pride in our graduates and want to ensure your further success. Join the UCR Alumni Association to stay connected, meet fellow alumni and build a beneficial network.

Step 11: Diplomas

Diplomas are not distributed at Commencement. You will receive a rolled up and ribboned copy of the Hippocratic Oath during the ceremony. For information regarding the distribution of diplomas, please visit the Registrar's website.
